Character Counts Spirit Week

This year, Horizon Science Academy Elementary School adopted a Character Education Program called Character Counts. Every student in the school participates in our weekly character education special focusing on the  six Character Counts pillars; Responsibility, Respect, Trustworthiness, Caring, Fairness and Citizenship.

This year, Class Dojo is used in every classroom and students’ points correspond with the six character pillars.  Teachers focus on recognizing positive community behavior in the classroom. Students can earn positive DOJO points by exhibiting high character behaviors. At the end of the week, students who have consistently shown “on target” expectations are able to shop at the Hawk Store. Students who have gone above and beyond, are recognized as “Hawks” and earn special treats. Students also have the opportunity to earn colored wrist bands representing the six pillars as they earn dojo points, and are recognized as role models of character.

This past week, students and staff celebrated Character Counts Week!  Each day during Character Counts week focused on a specific pillar of character.  Monday celebrated respect and students were invited to wear animal print or logos to school for “Roaring for Respect Day”.  Tuesday focused on caring, with students being allowed to wear their favorite hat to class for “Hats Off to Caring For Others Day”.  On Wednesday, students and teachers embraced good citizenship by bringing a dollar to wear jeans and a pink or purple shirt. In addition, we celebrate exceptional Hawk character. Students who earned one band first quarter participated in a cookie party. Those who earned two of their character pillar bands this quarter received a visit to Buckeye Video Game Truck and a cookie party.  Way to go Hawks! Over $250 in proceeds were raised and will be donated to a local charity.

By far the most popular day of the week was Thursday, where students were encouraged to “Dress Like Their Favorite Community Hero or Super Hero”.  From Spiderman to dressing up like Mr. Olis (5th grade math teacher), family members, entrepreneurs and the President,  hundreds of students donned their best superhero hero outfits in support of Character Counts Week.  To wrap up the week, students  “Banded Together for Kindness and Fairness” by wearing a wristband or headband.

While the students enjoyed dressing up and having fun throughout the week, their participation in the week long event was part of a larger focus on bringing a more positive and caring atmosphere into Horizon Science Academy Elementary.  Stay tuned for more Character Counts activities taking place throughout the year!
