On Wednesday, October 12, 2016, Horizon Science Academy Elementary School hosted a Third Grade Parent Dinner. Over 140 parents and students attended the event. Third grade is a big year and many important items were addressed, including 3rd grade expectations and responsibilities, homework expectations and keys to student success. The most important of the agenda items was a discussion about the Third Grade Reading Guarantee.
Third grade students are required to meet a minimum reading requirement in order to be promoted to 4th grade. The requirement is based on student performance on state mandated assessments. Students have several chances to meet the criteria throughout the year. Students must pass one of the following state accepted assessments to meet the Third Grade Guarantee criteria, the Spring NWEA test, Fall AIR test or Spring AIR test.
The Spring NWEA minimum reading score to pass is 190, the passing criteria for the 2016-2017 AIR Test has not yet been determined by the state. For more information about the Third Grade Reading Guarantee, please visit http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Early-Learning/Third-Grade-Reading-Guarantee
A big thank you to all parents who attended the dinner and helped make our first parent dinner a huge success.
